People often ask me how I ended up running a holistic, integrative, direct primary care practice in Huntersville instead of a conventional clinic. The honest answer is that I didn’t plan to. I planned to be a regular Physician Assistant doing regular medicine. But after 25-plus years of paying attention to what actually happens to patients, I couldn’t keep practicing the way I was practicing. This is the story of how Destiny Health Integrative Family Practice came to be written in my own voice, for the patients who are wondering if I might be the right practitioner for them.
Like most PAs in primary care, I started inside the conventional model. Seven-minute visits. Insurance documentation. The same handful of prescriptions for the same handful of complaints. I cared deeply about my patients, but the system gave me almost no tools beyond writing scripts. The patients I worried about most — the ones with chronic fatigue, vague gut issues, anxiety that wouldn’t lift, hormone problems, kids on their fourth course of antibiotics this year — those were the ones I had the least to offer. There just wasn’t time.
Two things changed me. The first was reading Dr. Dale Bredesen’s The End of Alzheimer’s. He laid out, in clinical detail, that chronic disease is the cumulative result of lifestyle inputs gone wrong — and that with the right framework, we can reverse it. The second was raising my own five children. I watched what food, sleep, stress, environment, and connection actually did inside my own home. I couldn’t unsee it.
I took Dr. Bredesen’s ‘DES’ (Diet, Exercise, Sleep) and expanded it to cover every major lever I had watched matter — Stress, Spiritual life, Safety, Supplements, Toxins, Intimate relationships, Nature, and the Y for Yodeling because joy is the most under-prescribed medicine in America. That became the framework I now use with every patient.
None of this works in 7 minutes. None of it. The only way I could practice the way the medicine actually demanded was to leave insurance-based care and build a Direct Primary Care membership practice — where my time belongs to my patients, not to a billing department.
I homeschooled all five of my kids. I know homeschool families. I know they often want a doctor who shares their values, respects their autonomy, and won’t pressure them. I built Destiny Health to be that practice — openly faith-friendly, openly homeschool-friendly, openly committed to medical freedom and informed consent. No pressure, no judgment, no script.
Destiny Health Integrative Family Practice serves patients of all ages across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, and the greater Lake Norman area. We use the DESTINY framework, the DPC membership model, and a combination of conventional and natural medicine — including Emotion Code therapy — to help families heal at the root, not just at the surface.
